AR:
What is important for you? What do you need to be able to produce your art?

KE:
What do i need? … Well, I need to be able to focus, obviously. And it [i]s very difficult for me to focus on things. I usually - I realized in years that I usually - need other people, you know I need to collaborate with people. They inspire me. And then I focus. Then I can go back home and work on my own. But I need - as a kickstart i need - to do something with other people. So that [i]s why I am a very talkative person. I try to talk a lot with people and do some stuff with them. I am not an isolated artist, and it [i]s very difficult to do that if you are a musician. If i was a painter I would be a solo person working on my own. But with music that [i]s quite difficult to do anyway and I choose to collaborate with people and they inspire me.

And inspirationalwise, well …, I do not know … it [i]s a difficult question … Maybe it [i]s a question that does not apply to me. I do n[o]t think I can give you any more answers about that.

I have this tendency - being the TV generation kid - whenever there is a TV screen on in a room - even though I am not watching it, I am not listening - I look at the screen. I can[no]t avoid looking at the screen. Even though, at home I do n[o]t watch TV that much because I am so used to the idea of the TV being on. So it [i]s like worshipping the TV when the TV is on. You have to look at it, right … Even though you do n[o]t watch it you can just stare at it not understanding anything but you have to look at it. And it is the same with the computer screen. So, whenever the screen is up there I have to look at it. So I am trying to close it, I am trying to get rid of the screen but I have to use the computer. Yes, some people might tell me why don’t you just stop using the computer and use something else? But I like the processes inside the computer. They help me create. So, I mean … I am not an enemy of the computer but I am just trying to adapt it.

I can downlook at the audience as well, I mean I do n[o]t have to, it [i]s not a must but at least the audience can … when they hear a sound that is not produced by the acoustic instruments it [i]s obvious an electronic sound and they want to … I think the audience wants to associate movements with sounds on stage. That [i]s the only difference between live music and listening to music from a CD because listening to music from a CD is better. Actually, the music is better recorded. … But the live experience is that you actually see the people making all those movements playing with their instruments and producing those sounds and it [i]s very easy to relate.

AR:
The audience is very important for you …

KE:
Yes. Yes because when you look at laptop musicians they look quite boring on stage. They look as if they were surfing the internet or looking at porno sites and getting really excited about them. And I don’t want to look that way. Well, nowadays - I believe - I still look like that but I am trying to avoid it as much as possible. And … since I am playing in a band and I need to be able to interact with other musicians, so I need to be able to look at them instead of looking at the screen. So that [i]s what I am trying to achieve. I am trying to design instruments and using interfaces like joy sticks or other controllers that are sensitive to touch and movements and then i dont have to look at the screen any more, I can just turn the screen off and look at the saxophon player and interact with him. That is my main goal.

AR:
Within your art production, what is the most interesting aspect of it for yourself or what is the most important thing you want to reach or maybe its several factors which are important to you?

KE:
Well … the weird thing is i don’t usually think about these things when I am doing art. I just do it. I think i am an intuitive person - when I like something i pursue it, I follow it and if it sounds nice or if it sounds right I use it somewhere … But my art, way of doing art, evolved in time. At first, - being an electronic person - I was interested in … you know … using a lot of equipment. I was trying to get a lot of equipment - buy stuff, save your money and … you know, get the latest. And then I suddenly realized that that is not working. So I got rid of most of my equipment and i started trying to focus on certain tools. I have limited my arsenal, so to say, and I am trying to get the best out of them. Sort of … it is like a guitar player using a guitar … and trying to turn the computer into an instrument using certain interfaces that involve touching or moving the arm … and that is important. One of my main aims nowadays is to be able to play the computer like an instrument so even I am trying to avoid looking at the screen. That is my driving motivat[ion] nowadays …

And soundwise, I am trying to be original and I like to change sounds into other sounds. I like to take text or speech and turn it into something else and I like to that live as well.

AR:
Would you also say [that] you are a political sound artist?

KE:
Not really. I don’t … my political views are not my driving force but of course I react just like any sensible human being should. But I don’t try to deliver political messages, actually i don’t try to deliver any message to art. … I guess I am neutral … like someone like Switzerland.

I deal with sounds rather than harmonies or rhythms.
