When you search for funding independently it is very hard to explain your situation to companies because again we are doing something very niche so simply the companies a. first [do not] understand whatever we are doing b. they do not want to understand – i mean they have a ready [concept] … it is easier to import a foreign artist, – even: it is a guarantee to bring a Picasso exhibition and Picasso has been there for many years, he is an established artist so why invest on some young Turkish artists if you can easily bring Picasso …

The state has its own state theaters, state operas. Our Ministery of Culture has a very small budget. It is very, very small and it invests all that money into its own art production, so …

So i have to do freelance work, i get [a] salary from the university - the university pays you a salary but then,  it does not support our research …

When i talk about this i am talking about miracles – so when i sell something it is kind of a miracle for me – a 2d print … or when i get money from the government it is kind of a miracle.

In Turkey we do not have a grant system. There is no grant system and when you get some money from the municipality or the state it is totally non-systemic support. Sometimes when we apply for projects abroads the government – the Ministery of Foreign Affairs – they give us money but it is not on a regular basis. You cannot take it for granted that if you make a project abroads you get money, so [there] is nothing like that.

Of course, you also need to live and we need to make things work and we need to run our studios and we need to make things continue [in] our lives. I alwas have been doing other things to support my art because i try [to] produce art at the edge so whatever i try to do it needs to be at the very edge. So i try to use the latest technology, i try to use some very political issues because i am interested in those issues. I try to [produce] work that is very cutting edge. And then, of course it is not easy to explain this to people – forget about selling this. Even explaining is a big issue. So i have always been doing other things to support my art. For example, i [have been] work[ing] in media for many years – i worked for advertising companies, pr agencies, television companies. And then, i have been teaching for many years - i teached in New York, i have been teaching in Istanbul but of course doing two things is not very easy. Doing a couple of things at the same time is a hard task because you need to shift totally the way you think.

You need contradicitions to produce art, especially conceptual art.
